A project honoring the roots and heritage of the Vietnamese language.
Francisco de Pina
and the journey of *Quốc ngữ* - A cultural bridge between Vietnam and Portugal.
A cultural bridge between Vietnam and Portugal: a tribute ceremony, an academic seminar, and a networking space—all held in the very homeland of the missionary who laid the foundations for the writing system used daily by over 100 million Vietnamese people.
Date
October 6–8, 2026
Location
Teatro Municipal da Guarda
Invited
delegates and guests
Francisco de Pina · 1585 – 1625 · Guarda
Guarda — the hometown of Francisco de Pina.
Background
A quiet cultural revolution
For millennia, the Vietnamese people possessed their own spoken language but lacked a writing system that was truly their own. *Chữ Quốc ngữ*—which emerged in the 17th century without the initial aim of becoming the national script—ultimately became the key that unlocked the door to knowledge for the entire population.
For generations, textbooks have credited Alexandre de Rhodes. Since 2019, however, scholars from Vietnam, Portugal, and France have re-examined 17th-century historical records from the Vatican and Jesuit archives, increasingly leaning toward the conclusion that Francisco de Pina was actually one of the pioneers who laid the groundwork, while de Rhodes was the student who inherited and perfected the work.
If not now, then when? If not us—the children of Vietnam—then who?
Central figure
Francisco de Pina
Guarda 2026 has selected Francisco de Pina as a symbol of the historical connection between Vietnam and Portugal.
The project materials highlight the pioneering role of Portuguese missionaries in the development of the Latin-based Quốc ngữ script, while also providing a platform for scholars to continue discussing the history of this writing system.
